Not sure that it was a MS driver problem, had the same problem with a Nvidia supplied driver for Win7 64.
Read a lot of dif ideas on a fix till I found this one. In your Nvidia Networking control panel you need to disable “Receive Side Scaling”. No idea what it is, but it worked. Quite likely the Vista driver you down graded to doesn’t use side scaling or has it disabled by default and that’s why it worked. Of course if this is the fix then the MS driver had it enabled by default and knowing MS there wasn’t a way to disable it. Even money that a year from now they’ll be some page at the MS site (very hard to find of course) with a link to a file that will fix it.

Dude, thank you, thank you thank you thank you!!!!! I’ve been struggling with this problem myself. I didn’t have the gateway message, it’s just that whenever I started up the PC, the network connection wasn’t there. I had to reboot a few times before it became available. Very odd. I’ve followed the instructions here, worked out well… and everything looks alright now! Well, now that I say it, it’s going to stop working…

Thank you! This has been a known issue for months (beta) and there are numerous “how to solve the dreaded gateway is not available” issue for those with the Nvidia nForce chipset. Fortunately this is the best step by step fix article yet! After a few days of multiple tries with different solutions from other articles out there, this worked perfect!
