Foolish Moves

Foolish Moves is the name of the latest chess tournament I’ve played in. The tournament was located in Mobile, AL, and was hosted by the guy(s) at TMC. As always it was a lot of fun, and there are always strong players. If you were to attend a TMC tournament, I think you would be surprised by the number of strong under-rated players there are. Several of them can definitely surprise you if you are not careful.

All in all, it was a good tournament for me, with a final score of 3 (out of 5). I had a first round loss to a LM (i’m only rated 1528), but it was a good game overall, but definitely not my best. My second round went much better with a win against a 1478 in only 14 moves! It was easily the most interesting game positionally for me during the tournament. I also managed to rack up a win in the 3rd round against a 1737 rated player. I was very happy about that to say the least. I was brought back down to earth during the 4th round however, with a loss to a 1305. From what I found out, he is taking lessons from Mr. Olson. Maybe I need to get some lessons too because it apparently works! Even though it was a loss, it was still an interesting game. I managed a win in the 5th round, though I didn’t really deserve it. It was a hopelessly drawn position, but my opponent made a number of mistakes which let me eek a win out of it. In all honesty though, I was spent by the 5th round. It was easily one of my most uninspired games. This is of no fault of my opponents, simply mine for being to tired to think or focus enough to give a better match.

Below are the games I played in this tournament. I have put in my own annotation, as well as run it through fritz with it’s annotation included. Feel free to comment or point out areas for improvement!

I had a plan on how I wanted this to go down, or at least something to work
toward. At this point, with my queen on the d3 square, she's aiming at the g6
pawn, which would then be looking dead at the queen if the f7 pawn isn't there.
So, I'm looking at the possibility of getting my knight on g5, then from there,
using the knight to capture the e6 pawn. If black captures with fxe6, then
the queen captures the g6 pawn with check forcing the king to move. I then
have play with the c1 bishop on the c1-h1 diagonal.} Nd7 8. O-O {Mongo - 41

Demolishes the pawn shield Mongo - 35 min remaining My Opponent - 26 This is
just devastating at this point, even more than I had hoped for when I first

have to put the knight from b5 on c7 to make it work. The e6 knight is
ensuring that the king can not move to d8, forcing it to e7. The e6 knight

TMC 1 Day G60 Tournament

The teach me chess club in Mobile had a small tournament on March 28, 2009.  I was able to make it to this tournament, and had a pretty good time.  There was a decent variety of players at various skill levels which made things interesting.  The only mishap really, was that the AC went out about 2 rounds into the 4 round tournament.  Luckly it was nice and cool out, so opening windows and proping open doors solved that problem.

Below are the games I played complete with my humble annotation.  I managed to play some decent games, and managed to make some dumb errors in each of those games at the same time.  All in all it was fun, and that is the reason I play.

this was a bad idea, opening up a diagnol to the king and leaving
the c pawn hanging.} Nxc4 {Yes, pawns are indeed tasty.} 19.Nb5 {Yeah,
this move isn't helping his situation any either. I guess he
was thinking he was forking the queen and the a7 pawn maybe.

paying attention anymore.} Bxd4 {Ouchy.} 26.Qg1 {Wanting to get
my queen off the board.} Qxb2 {Yeah, I could have Qxg1, Rxg1,

a threat to the white queen, and the bishop queen combo is a
threat to the rook.} 27.Qc1 {Not sure what he's thinking here.} Qxa1 {I

{B02: Alekhine's Defence: Chase Variation and lines with early
Nc3} 1.e4 Nf6 2.Nc3 g6 3.d4 d5 4.e5 Ne4 {I thought this was
interesting placement of it. Not that its bad (or good), just
interesting.} 5.Nxe4 dxe4 {The pawn structure already getting
crazy.} 6.f3 {White threatens to win material: f3xe4 (fritz)
I'm looking at freeing my knight (if exf3, Nxf3). I have used
only 1 minute off my clock so far.} Bf5 {I was suprised to see
this move as well. I'm not convinced this is the best route.} 7.g4 e6 $2
{Yeah, an out right mistake. I'm guessing black is thinking of
getting the queen to h4+ after gxf5. I think it would get awfuly
uncomfortable if that happend, so I end up H4.} 8.h4 Bxg4 {Black
is just trying to grab some material for the trapped bishop.} 9.fxg4 {At
this point i'm liking the advanced pawns on g & h - at least
if black castles kingside, which looks possible, but not definate.
I'm guessing i'm going to try to castle queen side at some point
to improve king saftey.} Nc6 10.Bb5 {I considered c3, but I figured
I should develop a piece and pin the Knight. If Qxd4, then Bxc6+,
leaves the queen hanging for free.} Qd7 {I don't think this was
blacks best move. Maybe moving the F8 bishop or even a6.} 11.Bg5 {Starting
to clear the way to the queen side, and prevent black castling
queen side for the moment.} Bg7 {Getting ready to 0-0?} 12.c3 {re-inforcing
the d pawn so I can "relax a little" as fritz would say.} h6 {What,
no bishop love?} 13.Bf6 {I'm looking at the bishop trade off
with my pawn ended on f6, and eventually having a pawn on g5
and h4.} Bxf6 {As expected.} 14.exf6 O-O-O {Rook and Queen combo
creating some possible power.} 15.Qe2 {Looking at snagging the
e4 pawn and reenforcing my white bishop.} Qd5 {protecting the
pawn} 16.Bc4 {No soup for you. I'm guessing at this point the
black queen may go to a5, making it somewhat harder/more dangerous
to castle queenside.} Qd6 {Looking at bringing the queen to g3
with check. Tho, there is not much he can do with that check
as it turns out.} 17.Qxe4 {Snagg'n the pawn. I have 51 minutes
remaining....} Qg3+ 18.Ke2 {This may or may not be the best spot,
but I did like the amount of squares controlled by the king alone.
Also, the queen is no longer a threat, even in my back ranks.} h5 {trying
to get some play for his rook to join the fray. I think that
is bad for me, and it also helps me achive what I wanted way
back when I put my bishop on F6.} 19.g5 {yeah, we don't want
to trade and let rooks come out and play, umkay?} Na5 {wasted
move?} 20.Bd3 Rhe8 {probably a pretty good move here, setting
up for some future pawn pushing badness. I have 47 min left on
my clock, black has 40.} 21.Rh3 {Fun's over, time to go now,
buh by.} Qd6 {After this move, there is some badness in store
for me. Its all about the e5 square, and opening up thte center
for his pieces.} 22.Nf3 {Finally getting the knight into the
action, and putting more pressure on the e5 square.} Nc6 {Had
he not made that knight move to a5 earlier, he'd have already
been ready for it and beat me to the punch. But since he lost
the tempo, I can avoid what he had in store. Lucky me.} 23.Ne5 {I
want to trade, and take advantage of my extra piece, but I can't
trade with the pawn, at least not yet.} Nxe5 24.Qxe5 Qd5 {He's
looking at the discovered check if I QxQ, Exd5. I see it, and
am cool with it cause I want to chop some wood.} 25.Qxd5 exd5+ {as
expected, taking d5 with discovered check.} 26.Re3 {More trades
pls sir.} Kd7 {I'm not so sure about this move, but whatever,
RxR, RxR, Kg2 and i'm ready to move my Re1 and trade his remaining
piece away.} 27.Rxe8 Rxe8+ 28.Kf2 Kd6 {I'm guessing he's getting
ready to c5 here soon.} 29.Re1 {Your piece, give it here pls} Rxe1 30.Kxe1
c5 {Exactly where I thought we'd be, and how I wanted it.} 31.dxc5+ {We
don't want him pushing it to c4, besides, after Kxc5, he can't
move forward at all, in fact he will have to move backwards!} Kxc5 32.b4+
{While I like this move, I should have just Bxg6, and prepared
to promote my f pawn. Because if fxg, then f7..f8 queen. If not,
then its just Bxf7, Bsomewhere else, f7, f8 queen. Either way,
game won. I just decided to do it the hard way....again.} Kd6 33.Kf2 {starting
to cut off the path to the h4 pawn, which is blacks only hope,
as small as it is.} Ke5 34.Kf3 {White controls pretty much then
entire 4th rank, black can not advance.} d4 {I looked at the
cxd+ route, but decided against it. Again, the hard way or no
way for me!} 35.c4 {I have 37 min left.} b6 36.a4 {Yeah, the
a & b pawns are not going anywhere anytime soon.} a5 37.bxa5 {I
could have b5, then just left the c pawn there, but i figured
the c pawn may could march down if need be.} bxa5 {Black has
25 min left.} 38.Bxg6 $1 {the death sentence (fritz) Yeah, this
was way past due. Way I saw it, he couldn't stop the f pawn from
promoting, and neither could he promote his d pawn because my
king can get there first. My soon to be promoted queen was just
insurance of that, but not required.} fxg6 39.f7 {Yeah, no stopping
that one.} d3 40.f8=Q Kd4 41.Qd6+ {It's over really, I don't
need no stinking c pawn.} Kxc4 42.Ke3 {.....and black resigned.
I had 35 min left on my clock.} 1-0

{C50: Hungarian Defence and Giuoco Pianissimo} 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4
Bc5 4.O-O d6 5.Nc3 Be6 {I thought this was interesting. I see
no reason not to take it. Black ends up with an open (soon to
be) rook file on F, but with doubled pawns on E.} 6.Bxe6 fxe6 7.d3 {Getting
ready to deploy the bishop or Knight to G5 and maybe get some
play. Fritz suggests Na4.} h6 {Prevents intrusion on g5} 8.Be3 {Trying
to trade the bishops and extend my already castled rooks power
down the F file.} Bxe3 9.fxe3 {White has new doubled pawns: e3+e4.} Nf6
{Pretty symmetrical position here. Time to shake it up a bit.} 10.d4 {I'm
sitting at 59 min left (out of 60). You could say we were playing
a little fast....} exd4 11.exd4 O-O 12.d5 exd5 13.exd5 Ne7 {I
thought this move was interesting. Not really something I'd have
considered because I like to advance instead of retreat, but
interesting none the less.} 14.Nd4 {I'm looking for the E6 square
with my knight. Black can't take the d5 pawn because of the Knight
for on e6. 55 minutes left on my clock. I really should slow
down a bit.} Qd7 {My opponent had 56 minutes left on his clock
at this point. We are both playing way too fast.} 15.Ne6 {White
threatens to win material: Ne6xf8. A beautiful square! (fritz)} Rfe8 $4 {gives
away a clear win (fritz). I'm not so sure about black having
a clear win, but Re8 was a big mistake.} 16.Rxf6 $1 $18 {Annihilates
a defender: f6 (fritz). And this is why its a big mistake. If
gxf6, then Qg4+ with a mate soon to follow.} Nxd5 {Another mistake.} 17.Qxd5
{Yum, another piece. I'm sitting pretty good at this point, which
is usually about the time I screw up :) } Kh8 {Sees the badness,
gets the hell out of the way.} 18.Rxh6+ {I'm looking for the
mate here, I thought I saw it, but fritz suggestion is stronger
(of course). Now, the mate is there if he makes the wrong move
in a little bit, problem is he doesn't. I had considered just
retreating my rook and enjoying my big advantage which would
most likely had been a fairly easy win. I had 47 minutes left
on my clock at this point, PLENTY of time.....} gxh6 19.Qd4+ Kh7 {Any
other move (Kg8) leads to mate. Problem is, Kh7 was stronger
than I had anticipated when taking the H pawn with my rook intially.} 20.Qe4+
Kh8 21.Qd4+ {Unfortunatly, I couldn't see how to finish this
game (successfuly anyway). Fritz's Re1 was the key, but I just
didn't see it, and it is much longer and drawn out than I had
hoped for.} Kh7 $11 {Again, not seeing a safe(ish) way to finish
off this game, I offered a draw after this move (much too my
dismay at having a won game earlier). My opponent MOST EAGERLY
accepted. Time to study some more...} 1/2-1/2

{D02: 1 d4 d5 2 Nf3 sidelines, including 2...Nf6 3 g3 and 2...Nf6
3 Bf4} 1.d4 d5 {I came into this game pretty much assuming I
was going to get clobbered. That being the case, I don't back
down from a fight, so it's on like donkey kong baby.} 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.e3 Bg4
4.c4 e5 {I just didn't like the trade off and the variation that
it may bring. I thought that maybe e5 would be more interesting,
and developmental for my black bishop along the a3-f8 diagol.
This proved true in the near future.} 5.Qb3 {I'm seeing a couple
of bad things in store for me here. One, no defense on the b
pawn, an indirect attack on the f7 pawn after the c & d pawns
are removed (assuming a knight move to g or e5 was in the works.
All in all, I thought all that sucked for me.} Bxf3 {So, lets
start by removing a future attacker, and doubling some pawns.} 6.gxf3 exd4
{thinking that exd would open the king file, which may (or may
not) be good for me.} 7.cxd5 {I didn't really expect him to do
that, at least not yet. I like my response and the power it provided.}
Nb4 {pretty good square, attacking the d5 pawn, possible king
rook fork on c2 if the queen were removed, also a possible check
(maybe for future combo) on d3 assuming no pesky queen or bishop
is bearing down on it.} 8.Bd2 {White threatens to win material:
Bd2xb4 (fritz) Yeah, that didn't really worry me too much.} Qxd5 $15 {Probably
not my strongest move, but my thinking was, if Bxb4, then Qxb3,
axb3, Bxb4+, then allowing me to castle queen side and have a
rook on the d file. Alternatly, if QxQ, then NxQ and I still
have a bit of play. Also, I know my opponent is good, and will
probably use his queen to inflict much badness upon my position,
so I thought it may be good to remove her while the getting is
good. That may not be a sound plan, but hell, it was a plan.} 9.Bc4 $2 {Yeah,
he's attacking my queen, and very soon the f7 square (with check),
but I'm guessing he just overlooked my next move.} Qxf3 $19 {Well,
now he can't Bxf7 because that would drop a piece. He's also
got the H1 rook hanging and both sides of his board are more
than likely too open for his comfort.} 10.Rf1 {Honestly, I didn't
think he'd put it there. I was guessing g1 giving the king a
tad more freedom and attacking the g7 square.} a5 {guarding the
knight, so if Bxb4, then Bxb4+, Nd2, Bxd2 +, Kxd2, then some
combination of badness with my d4 pawn and castling queen side.
At least thats what i'm seeing anyway.} 11.Qa4+ $2 {kind of a wasted
move. Easy blocked with c6 (which I do next), and also a possible
fork with b5, but more importantly the key d3 square is missing
a required defender.} c6 {I'm looking at the possible fork here,
forgetting something key to what i was looking at earlier.} 12.a3 {Trying
to get my knight out of his hair. It has been a constant thorn
to white the entire time.} d3 {Yes, the move that wins the game.
Coincidentally, not the move I made. I am still freak'ing kicking
myself for missing this simple damn move. Instead, just like
a freak'n n00b, i go for the material grab with b5. Unfortunatly,
I don't have the rest of the notation, because I missed it somewhere
around this area. Suffice to say, I end up screwing the game
up a good bit later and lost. You don't get many second changes
when playing an approximatly 1900 level player. Anyway, had I
played the most awesome d3 move, the following would happen.
If White Bxd3, then Nxd3mate. If axb4, then Qe2 mate. The only
non immediate mate, is Nc3, Nc2+, Qxc2 (forced), dxc2 winning
the queen and soon the game. I am still freaking kicking myself
for missing this one. Normally, this would not happen, but it
did. I have only myself to blame at a chance lost and many rating
points that could have been. Oh well, maybe next time.} *
